Sensory Issues

It’s pretty hot out (82F) right now. Gavin through a fit because we made him turn his ceiling fan on. He won’t sleep with the windows open either. He sleeps in a sweatshirt, sweat pants and sock all while under his comforter and buried under his stuffed animals. He says he’s not to hot but we are afraid he’s going to over heat. We don’t have central either. Does anyone else have this issue?

I would suggest taking him temperature with a thermometer. If his body temperature is not over heated, then dressing this way does not have to be an issue. As your first commenter indicated, my son sleeps in his underwear with no blankets and his bedroom door closed so the heat doesn't go into his bedroom. He's always been very healthy, so we've just let it go.
Kids with sensory issues sometimes likes the bulk of clothing, makes them feel more contained…

I agree. We have tried this but he won't sleep in lighter clothes. He says the fan makes hm to cold. We have tried giving him just sheets instead of his blanket but he woon't sleep. The ceiling fan is by far the lesser of the two evils. I have never thought of it as inhumane though. As his parents we are going to have to do things he doesn't like for his own good from tme to time.

Thank you for your comment

Have you tried approaching the issue from the other side, i.e. having him wear lighter clothing and use lighter bedclothes? Being autistic myself (and, needless to say, extremely sensitive to certain sensory), it seems to me that pressuring him on those fronts would be much more humane than forcing the fan on him.

see I experience the opposite of that my kids would sleep in just underwear if they could. They are forever telling me they are hot, even in the dead of winter they are always hot. I can never win with them.
