We are once again having “pain” issues with Gavin. We used to get them checked out all the time but they were always deemed to be psychosomatic. We were told not to feed into them because with a child like Gavin we would just be reinforcing that there was something wrong.

Yesterday Gavin started rubbing his left eye. Now we checked and there was nothing in his eye and it wasn’t even red. We made him stop rubbing it and told him it will get worse if he continues to rub it. During most of the day we never heard anything about it until it was time for free read before bed. He kept coming back downstairs in an obvious attempt to avoid reading his book.

Next thing we know he is down the stairs again. This time his eye hurts. He is rubbing his eye which just perpetuated the issue. We checked again and there was nothing wrong. The only problem he was having was the fact he kept rubbing it. Then we went through the whole “I need to go to the eye doctor” thing. We explained that if we left it alone he would feel better.

This is typical Gavin “drama” as we have privately dubbed it. When Gavin goes into a rage and hits himself or punches his door he is doing that with all his might and it has to hurt as he does damage to his body and whatever he is lashing out at. It has to be sensory related because that doesn’t seem to bother him but if he gets a paper cut it’s the end of the world.

This is no where near as extreme as my new friend Lindsey over at http://5kidswdisabilities.wordpress.com is helping her kids with. By the way if you haven’t read her blog you should. These kinds of issues seem to be much more common with autistic children. It just further complicates their already complicated lives.
