Autism and Hygiene

Hygiene. As if Autism wasn’t challenging enough. How do you deal with hygiene issues? Gavin is having issues with bathroom hygiene, like cleaning himself up after going potty. Sometimes he cleans himself up and sometimes he doesn’t. He won’t talk about it and won’t left us help.

The other big problem and it’s a big problem is that he sometimes doesn’t want to pee in the potty so he just pee’s his pants. He doesn’t change them afterwards. He just goes on like nothing happened. We just realized this the other day. He says that “sometimes he just doesn’t want to get up to go potty”. He gets engrossed in what he’s doing and won’t walk away.

What are we supposed to do with that? I guess we at least know where the smell was coming from now.

You have a special needs child that probably should still be in diapers.  Is there any end to how you pick on Gavin?

That really makes things tough. Thats got me at a total loss.Would he respond to some type of reward system?? I would ask his specialist about that one, i'm stumped. We are in the process of trying to get marc to use deodorant everyday and if we don't remind him, he forgets. We are going to use picture cards in the bathroom so that he remembers to brush his teeth, wash his hands after using restroom, and apply deodorant after he showers.Hang in there you guys…..

Lost and Tired

Rewards don't work with Gavin as he learns to exploit them. We are actually working on the picture cards also. We have the entire house labeled with tiny labels. I hope something works. Take care
