Backwards

Elliott is extremely intelligent and is advanced in many,  many ways.  However,  he has this thing with putting his shirts on backwards.

I’m puzzled a bit by this and I’m not sure what’s behind it.

It’s not a big deal but I’m curious if any of your kids do the same thing?  There are no tags on the shirt so that’s not it.  Also,  the neck lines are the same as well.

When I ask if I can help him fix it,  he tells me he wants it that way.  That indicates to me that he’s doing this for a reason.  Preference…maybe? He knows how to put it on right,  he choses not to.

Anyone have any ideas?

I noticed the picture had shirt that had a image that would be suitable on the back of the shirt. You may want to take note of any such pattern, than pick out new clothing taking this into account.

Robbie does the same thing…I pick my battles…lol

Soren was finally able to tell me it itches when he has the picture on the front. That being said, if I help him with it, he has no problem with the picture in the front, but when he does it himself, the picture (or collar) are always on backwards.

It amazing the similarities I see here and at the same time all the differences 😉

they can start a new trend 😉

My highly intelligent (we call him the "mathmagician") four year old does this, but with his shorts. He also does not want it corrected. I don't know either, but I am pretty sure it's nothing to worry about. I just go with it, if he doesn't care neither do I. We roll around town, backwards shorts and all. 🙂

That\’s awesome to hear. Many people wouldn\’t allow that. I feel the same way. Sometimes I can\’t allow it but other times it makes no difference to me.

My son puts his shoes on the wrong feet, more often than not, so it isn't random. My thoughts are when you look at a shirt to put it on, if you're looking at the design, it will go on with the design in the back. We had OT do something with my son, where he'd have to stand in front of a full length mirror and check his tags for each article of clothing, and he'd get a star/check mark when it was on the right way. So he'd have to look at the back of the shirt in the mirror, pull the neckline up and look for tag/sharpie markings/whatever was there. Same with underwear and pants. Socks he had to check for a toe seam. Shoes they put stars on the inner side of them (as in the inner ankle, not inside of it). All the stars meant the task was done and it was reward time. (This was all done with schedule pictures/PECS pictures, and all that.) Sometimes the things we take as granted we have to remember have to be broken down REALLY simple, or differently with some kids. (I have 3. One NT, one slightly aspie, one PDD-NOS, hardcore.)

My daugter is 10 with severe autism and she will intentionally put her shoes on the wrong feet. I'm not sure why she prefers them that way.

Hello there. =) I'm new to your blog, I have an 8 year old with Autism and ADHD boy. To make my story short: Johnny went thru stages where he would bite the collar of his shirts, then he also went thru a stage where he would wear the shirts on backwards. He is verbal and when asked he would tell us that he wanted the "picture on the back"….I don't know….He doesn't do it anymore, but he still refuses the tags only on bottom shirt, he can wear them on the jackets or sweaters now 😉

Nice to meet you. It\’s a mystery to me sometimes, however, I have learned to pick my battles.

Congrats because progress is progress.

Jillian

Maybe he knows it drives you a bit batty. 🙂

Total possibility. It doesn\’t really bother me per say. I just like to understand, when ever possible what makes my kids tick.
I have learned that what makes them tick can remain elusive at times. 😉

That\’s a great idea. We had to do something similar with our oldest.

Everyone learns differently. Thanks for commenting 😉

Shirts usually have decorations on the front. Maybe he just prefer them on the back.
I agree with Dearest Nicky, maybe is his own sense of style, and i totally find him cute! ^_^

Lost_and_Tired

Thanks. That is a definite possibility. I\’m gonna pay closer attention and see if there is a pattern.

Dearest_Nikky

perhaps his own sense of style? Or it's just one of the few things he knows he has some control over? either way he's cute! 🙂

Lost_and_Tired

He is totally cute 🙂

Your guess is as good as mine. We used to wear our shirts inside out when I was in school. Maybe your right.
