Our little emergency

This morning,  while getting the boys ready for nap,  I looked out the window and saw one of the neighbors cats torturing a baby squirrel.

I went outside to chase the cat away and rescue the baby squirrel.

I chased the cat away once but couldn’t find the little victim. After going back into the house and getting back to work,  I noticed the cat was back and going to town on the tiny squirrel.

I grabbed a towel and ran out after it once again.  This time I found the squirrel and scooped it up and brought it home.

I’ve never seen a baby squirrel before and this guy was pretty tiny.

There was no obvious signs of blood or injury but it wasn’t walking very well. I wasn’t sure if it was hurt or just to young to be walking.

I called Lizze to show her and also let me back into the house, because I locked myself out.  🙁
We decided to take it to the Sippo Lake Wildlife Center. They rescue wild animals and it’s really the only option. We packed up the boys for the brief road trip and were on our way.
Elliott stayed home from school today but he was fine to make the trip.  He was feeling better,  but very sleepy with his meds on board.

We figured this could be a fantastic experience for them.  They even got to pet the baby squirrel and learn all about it.  They also witnessed and demonstrated compassion. Things like this help them to realize that the world is bigger than they are.

They helped with the entire process and received a case number and information so they could call and check on him.

The staff confirmed it was a boy.. 🙂

Once we got home,  everyone had lunch and went to bed.

I think this is one of those life lessons that you can’t learn inside a classroom.  No matter how big or small,  life matters.  I want my children to know that and apply that to their lives.

By the way,  the staff said that the little squirrel was rescued in time and didn’t sustain any major injury.  However,  it’s to young to be on its own so he will live there for a few weeks before being released back into our yard 🙂

So cute! I know a couple of people who have rescued baby squirrels, and they actually brought them into their house as pets. They sure can do a lot of damage, though!

Thanks for sharing 🙂

Awwww. How adorable. I'm so glad you rescued it and the kids got to have that experience.

@MeaghanGood thanks. They learned a lot.

I'm so glad you did that. Most people would have thought "It's just a squirrel." Every life is precious.

lostandtired

@hudginsvicky that's the message I wanted to send my kids and hopefully inspire others to do the same

Some neighbors rescued a baby squirrel but they fed and watered it. It became a pet for awhile but it became too dependent and probably died when they finally took it to a park.

This is really awesome! My daughter has this HUGE heart for animals & would have just delighted in this entire scenario! As I type this she is in plank position in the hallway trying to lure out the kitty cat with a piece of yarn! It's so interesting to see what she really puts her patience into when she seems to have so little of it elsewhere…*sigh*

 @j12mc Perhaps it's a calling. 🙂

🙂  It's adorable.

 @OnyxPanthyr I know, right?

Awh…That is so cute!

We have a cat and she does unfortunately a really good hunter. This past Tuesday she brought us a tiny baby rabbit, but not by the neck but rather carrying as a little kitten. We took it to the wildlife center too, and it seems to be doing great so far!

 @kat13 Today was the day for baby squirrels. The lady in front of us just brought in 5 little tiny squirrels as well.

 @lostandtired It must be a squirrel season!
