What is it about haircuts?

I feel that there is always something to be positive but not at the expense of being realistic. In my opinion, dealing with reality is absolutely crucial, especially when it comes to raising special needs kids.

There is a very fine line between being positive and approaching a situation in a realistic manner.

As silly as it sounds, Lizze and I are getting ready to approach a situation that many parents of Autistic kids would avoid like the plague. Can you guess what that is? That’s right, haircuts.

There are so many other things in the world my boys would rather do than get their hair cut.  To be completely honest, there are a million  and on things that I would rather do than take them get their hair cut.

On many occasions, we have gone and come back with the same about of hair on their heads that they left with. Only now they were extremely stressed out and overstimulated.

I don’t know what it is about a haircut that sets them off. Perhaps is the sounds of the trimmers, or the anxiety of having someone inside their personal space and touching them.

All I know is that I’m about to attempt this on my own because Lizze is not feeling well now.

What is about a friggin haircut?

I am fortunate enough to have a stylist in my family who is kind enough to come into our home to cut our twins’ hair.  We took our kids twice to a public place and that was enough for us.  Now at least as our son is screaming his head off while kicking everyone within leg distance as I hold him as tight as I can on my lap or as I hold my daughter who seems to be overwhelmed by just the sound of the scissors clipping as she cries real tears we are in the privacy of our own home.  I do have to say though that they are getting just a little bit better every time and we take any progress we can get!!  I just checked out the link for Kuts 4 kids that you posted and we live in the area so hopefully we eventually get to the point where we feel brave enough to take them there and see how it goes.

I cut my sons hair.  It used to take me about an hour?  Now I’ve gotten it down to 20-30 mins.  Always a production and a hassle.. but I must admit it’s gotten better.  I can even do it without using TV as a buffer!

@Diane progress is progress. 🙂

ElenaDillon Torture. Absolute torture. Sigh.

@Julie2930 @ElenaDillon I know the feeling. It’s gotten a lot better for us lately.

I am ok with haircuts but not blow dryers. I always warn the stylists: “Do NOT blow dry my hair. Don’t let that thing get anywhere near me. The sound of it will have me on my knees and trying to crawl under the chair.”

MeaghanGood Thanks for the insight. 🙂

I guess the whole “watch Daddy get his hair cut first” thing doesn’t work for you! 🙂 Just kidding. God put a stylist in our lives who loves my daughter and she lets him do whatever he wants with her hair. Sometimes she won’t let me brush it, even. It helps that his son is somewhere on the autistic spectrum…

BRRBTR that’s awesome.

have you heard of a trim comb?  (it’s kinda an old fashioned thing).  We tried it on my 3yo last week- AMAZING.  First tear free trim ever

lostandtired

jjean3940 I’ve never heard of that before. I’ll have to check into it.

Anthony is afraid of the clippers cutting him.  We have a couple of places we go that they will cut just with the scissors, but when he was younger, he always cried that it hurt when we cut his hair.  Just the cutting with the scissors.  I ignored him back then, but now I see that with his sensory problems, he may have actually felt something when it was cut.  Also, if we go somewhere familiar, he does a lot better.  One of my ex-husbands cousins has her own salon now, and he has no problem letting her cut his hair

AngieLuna it’s always nice to have a place to go.

Yup, that’s been the deal with us too.  It has improved though!  I bought some hair clippers and began to cut his hair, his brother’s hair and my husband.  He watches them get their hair cut and I think that helps.  He did fight me a bit at first but now just goes along with it.  🙂

Melisssssa that’s awesome. My kids will either do really good or really really struggle.
