#Autism Discussions: Dealing with Obsessions and Fixations

I wanted to open up a discussion on Autism related obsessions or fixations.  I know that some people don’t like the word obsession but for many families, obsession is what they are dealing with.

Personally, I don’t find obsession offensive at all because it accurately describes the behaviors some kids, like mine, exhibit.

The way I see it, candy coating things doesn’t do anyone any favors because it’s basically ignoring the reality of the situation and pretending it’s different than what it actually is.

On the other hand, many kids on the Autism Spectrum can be interested in things, without taking it toothed level of obsession.

Everyone is different.

Putting aside the disagreements over words choice, let’s talk about how you deal with this type of behavior.

What types of things do your kids become obsessed (fixated, focused, interested) with and how doesn’t impact their/your life.

In my opinion, likes/interests become a problem when they begin to interfere with everyday life. There’s nothing wrong with being interested in a particular subject.  This is something that can be a hugely positive thing.  With that said, as with many things in life, balance is everything.

My kids have obsessions.  I call them obsessions because they are so incredibly hyperfocused on things like Legos, Sonic, Squinkies, Angry Birds and most recently…NERF guns.

What’s your experience with this type of behavior? Do you ever find the need to intervene or attempt to redirect? Why?

Keep in mind with them on the spectrum and them being kids it is harder to get that balance obsessions and real life, as they get older it may be alittle easier to find a balance
Also keep in mind there mental age does not match there physical age, for example I am in my 20’s and about 1-2 years ago I started wanting posters up when that is normally in the teenage years.
