And so it begins: The Great Cell Phone Debate

And so it begins: The Great Cell Phone Debate (via http://mylifebeyondlabels.com)

Elliott Richard came to Rob and I the other day (after a whopping whole 2-3 days of school) and announced that, “Mom, Dad, I need a cell phone. ALL of my friends have them. Why can’t I?” And there we are. He’s 7 and a 1/2 years-old and suddenly…

I work customer care for a wireless carriers. On one occasion a mother called and ordered a iphone for her two year old. This was a call my husband who also works there took. My personal youngest child with a cell phone call was a 5 year old with a Nokia lumia.

Suckiest answer EVER given by a parent, particularly since I don’t know anyone who even knows anyone who has ever evinced even a remote desire to jump off a freaking bridge. How about, if all your friends are wearing Tiffany’s, shouldn’t you? It makes as much sense.

I got my son his first cell phone when he was 10. It was a smartphone and he did very well with it. But then I bought him an Ipod for his birthday. There is a free app that can be downloaded that allows him to call/text me and whoever else he happens to have on his contact list. He now prefers using the Ipod over the smartphone!!!

I at 26 years old I didn’t get a cell phone until I was in my 20’s and it was a tracfone that was crappy but it worked. The same thing like with cellphones now it was I think CD players in when I was kid and I didn’t get one until I was in High School and I think partly it was my parents worried I was going to take it apart to find out how it works. For the longest time all I had was a walkman and a Talkboy if any body remembered those from home alone 2.
but lets get back to the subject at hand I think there were phones that the parents could restrict the to just to the parents cells and any other emergency numbers and that is it, But there is another problem is if you decided to get him a cheap tracfone or prepaid then the possibility Emmet and Gavin getting jealous then they would want one. I think it would be Gavin more then Emmet because Gavin is in his teens but I think gavin would prefer to talk to Sonic and other other visual challenged friends.
This one I will say it is a hard choice.

OH LOL, You tell Elliott not everyone has one. My 13, 10, 7, or 6 yr olds don’t have one. We have decided that it is in our oldests’ 2 best interest to get one family phone for them to take when they are out with friends or at a sleepover. It will not be used when they are home or for texting friends. They will not have their own phones until they can pay their portion of the monthly bill. Just because we live in a techno saturated world doesn’t mean that I have to buy my kids every device known to man. You can also assure him that we only have a Wii with about 10 games, and 2 laptops for 4 kids to share. There are also no tablets to be found under this roof and gasp… only 1 TV that everyone has to share. I get some flak from my kids sometimes because they are so “deprived” but really they couldn’t be bothered by it. We spend time together as a family and we have fun. Hopefully he will come to understand that the things he does have some others don’t and his family and friends are priceless or at least good entertainment 🙂
