Elliott’s EEG: I don’t even know what to say about this but here’s what happened

Update: First let me apologize for not updating you a until now.  It’s been any absolutely exhausting day. It’s been an exhausting day on a number of levels.  For now, I just want to bring everyone up to speed on Elliott’s EEG from earlier today.  image Elliott ended up doing really, really well.  He was extremely nervous at first and after a bit of tears, he got in the zone.  After the EEG was completed, we met with the nurse practitioner and after that, we met with the doctor.

The doctor explained the EEG from today was clear and that there are absolutely no signs of seizure activity.  This is amazing news.  She then asked me why I was so concerned.  I explained that Elliott’s Mom had witnessed a seizure when he was much younger and then some additional concerning behavior about 3 years later.

With everything that has gone on over the last 3 or 4 years with Gavin, Lizze and I remember what happened in this particular situation very differently.

It’s a very difficult situation because when you have multiple kids having serious health issues, all at the same time, sometimes things get confusing.

I thought he had a history of seizure activity because I took what I had been told at face value and never even thought to question it. As it turns out, there is absolutely no history of anything even resembling a seizure. Whatever she saw, wasn’t a seizure.

The doctor informed me this afternoon that  she went over all his precious records, including the past EEG’s and everything was clean.  I didn’t even know what to say. I felt a whole bunch of things in that moment, confusion being one of them.

She explained that there aren’t even any notes that mention anything about Elliott being primed and ready for seizures.  She gave me copies of all the reports to confirm this and put to rest any concerns or fears I’d had for the last few years.

The primed and ready for seizures came about when Elliott’s original neurologist had explained that kids with neurological issues, like Autism for example, are more likely than their typical peers to have seizures.

I thinks that’s where the confusion stems from.

So, the good news is that Elliott and seizures have absolutely nothing to do with each other.  That’s a huge and I mean HUGE relief because I’ve been really worried.. The bad news is that I’ve been worried about something for years, that didn’t happen.

At the moment, I’m just grateful that Elliott’s okay, isn’t having seizures and apparently never has.

The truth is, at the end of the day, that’s all that matters.  This won’t happen again because I’m handling everything myself but I’m left to wonder what else there’s been confusion about over the last 15 years.

This whole thing amounted to unnecessary panic, worry and stress but thankfully accurate information has clarified this.. I just want to move forward…

I understand wanting to just go forward from here and I agree that you can’t change the past, but it might be in the kids’ best interests to go through their medical records. I am remembering all the things she said Gavin did that you never witnessed. For all of his challenges, he seems to have grown into a nice and helpful boy who no longer has a lot of the behaviors she accused him of. To be honest, I am not at all surprised by this. After reading Lizze’s blog I have always felt she was a candidate for Munchausen’s and/or Munchausen’s by Proxy. She is a woman who LOVES diagnoses. And this same woman who couldn’t get out of bed at your house for all her illnesses is now making dinners and going on dates. You and the boys deserve far better than what she gave and continues to give you.

That is really quite scary. I know Gavin has a lot of challenges but it makes me wonder how reliable the narrating was, in regards to the behaviors only she witnessed. Anyway, I am glad Elliot is okay. You’re a great dad. I’m rooting for you guys.

Karalyn Fett

I am at a loss for words. But it’s absolutely fantastic that everything is okay.

Just…wow.
Glad Elliott is okay and safe from further mismanagement.

I know… Elliott’s okay and at the end of the day, that’s what matters..

I want to just say this and then I’m closing this thread. No one said or did anything wrong in the comments below. I agree with some of what everyone is saying but not everything. After discussing this at length with Lizze, this ended up being more of a misunderstanding than anything else. This was the only situation, medically speaking in which there was this level confusion.

There are many reasons for me to question the last 15 years but this particular situation has been at least partly caused by misunderstanding and I’ve updated the post to reflect that.

I’m not upset with anyone, I just don’t want this discussion to go any further.

Thank you all for understanding and for your unending support 🙂

Thanks Kim. I agree and am concerned. If I had to guess the nature of the issue, it’s that there’s a difference between what is said and what she hears. I already know that to be the case. The reason this does concern me so much is that I didn’t think this issue went back that far.

Since she left, I’ve become aware of many things I didn’t know.

Truthfully, I don’t believe anything was done in malice. It’s a perception issue and that’s different than intentionally misleading. That being said, the end result is the same so regardless of the cause, it’s a problem.

Kim Gebhardt

I don’t think it was malicious either, I think it was done for the attention. You obviously know (or knew, as the case may be) her better than I ever will, but my opinions about her and her behaviors come from reading her own words.
In any event, I’m glad that Elliott is okay and doesn’t have any sort of seizure disorder.

Lucky that Rob’s been so hands on through the boys lives, that would have really limited the damage she could have caused.

Thank you. I’ve always questioned Gavin’s alleged behaviors, as have most others in his life. That being said, there are attachment issues but do I believe that Gavin was doing everything he was accused of? No I don’t. At least not with malice intent anyway.

Yes it is. I need create safety nets that prevent this sorta thing from ever happening again.

This happened to be one of the rare occasions when I was unable to be present at an appointment for one of the kids.
