Getting help for #mentalillness is NOT weakness

I’ve been very open about my struggles with mental illness and I’ll continue to be that way. There’s absolutely no shame is struggling with mental illness.

Getting help for mental illness is also not a sign of weakness. It’s 2018 for God’s sake, you’d think this would be more easily understood but sadly it’s not.

Unfortunately, there’s still a great deal of judgmental and ignorant people out there. They are critical of what they don’t understand and nothing you or I could say will change that.

I think we’ve made progress in mainstreaming the discussion of mental illness but we have a ways to go.

If you’re struggling with a mental illness, please don’t be afraid to get help. Admitting you need help is NOT a weakness. The only weakness is displayed by those who judge others for things outside of their control.

It takes a tremendous amount of courage to get help when you need it. I applaud each and every one of you who’ve done just that and encourage those of you who need help to find it.

If you’re struggling, please reach out to someone you trust. Talk to your doctor and ask for help. You can even look for help online at places like TalkSpace. Not only will you be glad you did but you’ll be setting a positive example for others who are struggling.

Stay strong, ask for help when you need it and tell anyone who would judge you to bug off. ☺

I agree. And clinical depression and anxiety are mental illness, and many of this population are afflicted with one of those. Mental illness can be caused by physical illness. And I think being mentally ill can lead to physical illness too. This mind-body dichotomy that we so love in the West is foolish. Illness is illness, period.
