#Autism can certainly make marriage more challenging but we’re celebrating 15 years today

Today is a very special day. Lizze and I are celebrating our 15th wedding anniversary. We’ve been married for 15 years today. That’s crazy for a number of reasons.

First of all, times flies.

Secondly, there was a time not too long ago, where it looked like our marriage had ended. It was the darkest, most difficult time of my life. Lizze and I spent 2 years apart before reconciling.

We’ve been back together for a few years now.

Life had gotten in our way. Lizze had suffered caregiver burnout, although we didn’t know that at the time, and it seemed like our world collapsed.

While things aren’t perfect, we’re doing well and have learned a great deal in the process.

We must take care of ourselves. We must take care of our marriage as well. Those things have to happen so we can be the parents we need to be for our kids. ☺

I’m so incredibly grateful that my family is whole again. I love my wife, she loves me and we love our family.

When you think of milestone anniversaries like this, you think about champagne, chocolate or fancy dinners. That’s awesome when those things are possible. In our case however, we are unable to do things like this for a number of reasons, mostly financial in nature.

My wife and I tend to order a pizza, share some ice cream and watch a movie. It’s not about what you do but rather why you do it and who you do it with. ☺

Being Autism parents can make marriage incredibly difficult but even incredibly difficult isn’t impossible. It takes a great deal of work and it’s not always easy but nothing worth having ever is.

Lizze, I love you so much. Happy anniversary.. ☺ 💙

We know the feeling too. We just had our Anniversary of 13 years and with the special disabilities in our home our marriage is still going strong.
