#Autism parenting is all about progress not perfection

It’s not a huge surprise that Gavin’s appointment with his immunologist went well. These appointments rarely go poorly because he’s monitored so closely on a weekly basis.

Gavin sees his immunologist because he has Common Variable Immunodeficiency or CVID, which put simply, means he lives with a severely compromised immune system. This is a life threatening condition that has no cure. In order to stay healthy, he requires IVIG infusions twice a week and we do those at home. Today’s appointment is a follow up. We have to physically check in about every six months and have special labs run. That assumes there aren’t any problems between appointment.

Anyway, everything went pretty well and Gavin was even able to answer most of the questions on his own. I only spoke if clarification was needed. 😉

The one thing we still have to work on is that Gavin always looks at me when he answers questions, regardless of who’s asking the questions. He’s always done that and most people who know him, understand that. It’s a problem on occasion because it appears as he’s looking to me for cues as to what he should be saying. It sends the message that his answers are not his own. We worked on that today a little bit. I needed to remind him to look at the person who asked the question and not me. We just need to keep trying.

Autism isn’t easy and plays a huge role in Gavin’s cognitive challenges. When you’re an Autism and/or special needs parent, you have to realize, accept and embrace that it’s all about progress and not perfection. Great job today Gavin.. 😉

If I had to guess I would say that Gavin is looking to you because you normally either answer for him or contradict what he says. One of the things I noticed when you interviewed Lizze and the boys on your podcast was that you would ask a question and then either answer it yourself or basically tell them they were wrong when they did answer. It’s no doubt a learned behavior on your part from years of having to answer all the questions, but Gavin looking to you for cues and/or approval is also a learned behavior for him. Either way, glad his appointment went well.
