He’s permanently moved himself into my room

For about a month and a half, Emmett has been crashing in my room at night. He won’t sleep in his own bed or stay in his room since his mom moved out. I sorta expected this because it’s what happened the last time as well.

He’s struggling more than he’s saying or maybe is aware of, but the constant nightmares, the strangling me at night, tummy aches, headaches and moodiness have me concerned.

Emmett has informed me that he’s permanently moving into my room.

He’s moved most of his things, including his clothes, into the recently vacated dresser in my room. I’ve spoken to him about how this is a temporary arrangement because it’s important that he sleep in his own bed. I’m happy to do this if it means he’s more comfortable and sleeps at night, but he’s glued to me, making it hard to sleep. I’ll make this work if it’s what he needs but having him tell me that he’s permanently moving in, has me a little concerned.

I don’t remember exactly how long he refused to sleep in his own bed the last time but it was longer than six months and probably closer to a year. He did eventually transition back but it wasn’t easy, required a lot of patience and many sleepless nights.

He has to make physical contact throughout the night and that really makes it hard to sleep. He’s also like a little blast furnace and that’s uncomfortable. I know he has his reasons for all of this and I get it. I’m just hoping we don’t get stuck here, that’s all.

Meanwhile, Elliott’s enjoying their room to himself and supports Emmett’s permanent relocation into mine. That’s not helping things.

One day at a time.

Hopefully Dr. Patti can provide you with guidance and direction on the best way to handle this that’s most beneficial for Emmett.

My daughter was the same way when her dad left. She is neurotypical so it was easier for me to eventually only have her in there on weekends. She’s 10. I don’t have any advice other than what you’re already doing.
