How To Help Your Kids And Your Dog Get Along

Dogs can be a wonderful addition to any family with children; they teach them important lessons about caring for others and unconditional love. Plus, dogs are loads of fun for children to play with, and they can be great companions for one another.

However, dogs are animals and can be unpredictable if they are frightened. It’s important that if they are going to be living in a house with children that you take all of the necessary steps to ensure everyone is happy. Click this to know more about puppies.

Introductions

When you are introducing your child to a new dog, it’s important that they are well supervised by a responsible adult who can help to ensure the interaction goes smoothly.

Before the meeting, you should ensure that the child knows that they need to be calm when approaching the dog and not to make any loud noises or sudden movements that might startle them. It’s also best not to have the child give any treats to the dog, as food can make them over-excited.

Be sure that the introduction takes place in an open space and that the dog doesn’t feel trapped in any way.

Involve children in animal care

Involving your children in the care of the dog is a great way to build on their relationship with one another. The dog will love your child if they are someone who is involved with feeding and walking them, and in turn, your child will learn a lot of lessons from taking care of a dog.

Taking care of an animal teaches your child responsibility and that their actions directly impact the welfare of the dog. It also teaches them compassion as they learn to be gentle with the dog, and what makes them happy, and what makes them sad.

Give your dog the option to leave

Houses with children in them can often be quite loud and hectic, to say the least!

It’s a good idea to give your dog the option to leave noisy rooms in case they begin to feel overwhelmed. You could designate a quiet area of your house as being the dog’s room, where they can go when they want some alone time. Another option is to look at an automatic sliding door like the ones from evoproducts.com. These devices are fitted to your existing sliding door and allow your dog the option to go outside whenever they need to, which means that it’s easier to promote peace and calm in your household.

Train your child as well as your dog

When you own a dog, it’s important that you train them well so that they obey your commands and you know that you have control of them.

If you have children, it’s equally as important that you take the time to teach your child about how to behave around a dog – for example, not to pet them too hard and not to play with their food while they are eating.

Approaching training in this way means that both animal and child will be able to live in harmony with one another.
