The Lady was the Virgin Mary. The name became ladybug in the US. mathewpenny648 June 16, 2017 Reply They were called Our Lady’s Bird or Lady Beetles in Britain. The Lady was the Virgin Mary. The name became ladybug in the US. So the “lady” part is about who or what the bug is named for, not its gender. 🙂
