Why are we still using any form of the word “retarded” in 2014?

It’s 2014 people. Why is it that we are still using the word retarded or retard in this day and age.  I was listening to the radio this morning on the way to go walking and I the song Fancy by Iggy Azalea came on.

I wasn’t really paying attention but when the second verse came on, I thought I heard the word retarded.

I was thinking that I wasn’t hearing this right because in the song, she butchers the English language and I figured that I misunderstood the lyrics.

However,  thinking about it later, I looked it up and sure enough, she uses the word retarded in the second verse.

Having said that, I’m not really sure what she means by saying that as I’m fully in understanding what the hell she’s saying.  That being said, there were others words that could have been used in its place.

I’m sure this wasn’t meant to be offensive but what it does is make the word common place.  When we use that word or any form of it, people become more comfortable saying it and we all know how the word is most commonly used.

After reading noticing this, I was just wondering what your thoughts on this are? Do you find this offensive or is the way it’s used okay in your opinion?

Here are the lyrics from Fancy. I’ve put the second verse in bold.  I’m just curious what you think about this…..

IGGY AZALEA LYRICS
“Fancy”
(feat. Charli XCX)

[Verse 1 — Iggy Azalea:]
First thing’s first, I’m the realest (realest)
Drop this and let the whole world feel it (let them feel it)
And I’m still in the Murda Bizness
I could hold you down, like I’m givin’ lessons in physics (right, right)
You should want a bad bitch like this (huh?)
Drop it low and pick it up just like this (yeah)
Cup of Ace, cup of Goose, cup of Cris
High heels, somethin’ worth a half a ticket on my wrist (on my wrist)
Takin’ all the liquor straight, never chase that (never)
Rooftop like we bringin’ ’88 back (what?)
Bring the hooks in, where the bass at?
Champagne spillin’, you should taste that

[Hook — Charli XCX:]
I’m so fancy
You already know
I’m in the fast lane
From L.A. to Tokyo
I’m so fancy
Can’t you taste this gold?
Remember my name
‘Bout to blow

[Verse 2 — Iggy Azalea:]
I said, “Baby, I do this, I thought that you knew this.”
Can’t stand no haters and honest, the truth is
And my flow retarded, each beat did depart it
Swagger on stupid, I can’t shop in no department
To get my money on time, if they not money, decline
And swear I meant that there so much that they give that line a rewind
So get my money on time, if they not money, decline
I just can’t worry ’bout no haters, gotta stay on my grind
Now tell me, who that, who that? That do that, do that?
Put that paper over all, I thought you knew that, knew that
I be the I-G-G-Y, put my name in bold
I been working, I’m up in here with some change to throw

[Hook — Charli XCX:]
I’m so fancy
You already know
I’m in the fast lane
From L.A. to Tokyo
I’m so fancy
Can’t you taste this gold?
Remember my name
‘Bout to blow

[Bridge — Charli XCX:]
Trash the hotel
Let’s get drunk on the mini bar
Make the phone call
Feels so good getting what I want
Yeah, keep on turning it up
Chandelier swinging, we don’t give a fuck
Film star, yeah I’m deluxe
Classic, expensive, you don’t get to touch
Ow…

[Verse 3 — Iggy Azalea:]
Still stuntin’, how you love that?
Got the whole world asking how I does that
Hot girl, hands off, don’t touch that
Look at it I bet you wishing you could clutch that
It’s just the way you like it, huh?
You so good, he’s just wishing he could bite it, huh?
Never turn down nothin’
Slaying these hoes, gold trigger on the gun like

[Hook — Charli XCX:]
I’m so fancy
You already know
I’m in the fast lane
From L.A. to Tokyo
I’m so fancy
Can’t you taste this gold?
Remember my name
‘Bout to blow

[Outro:]
Who that, who that, I-G-G-Y
That do that, do that, I-I-G-G-Y
Who that, who that, I-I-I-G-G-Y
Blow

Who-who-who-who that, who that, I-G-G-Y
That do that, do that, I-I-G-G-Y
Who that, who that, I-I-I-G-G-Y
About to blow

Retard means ‘hold back.’ For example, Jake-brakes on a tractor-trailer are properly called ‘brake retarders’ and you can find signs saying ‘brake retarders prohibited’ when entering some towns in PA. I say it at work in the same way as the song (although in my case it is the flow of liquid). I know it is never well received when I say this, but in my opinion, to forbid the use of a word due to ignorance is the same as using it incorrectly out of ignorance.

Raynette Jones

i brought my kids up that we do not use that word even kiddingly as it is not funny and yes there has to be another word to use. the great news is that when their friends came over and might have said that word, i would explain to them why not to say it. but to answer your question, I don’t know why anyone would use it now

tannawings

I either am not reading the lyrics the same as you did, or am seeing she used the word retarded as a verb meaning “to make slow; delay the development or progress of (an action, process, etc.); hinder or impede” If you use it this way she is saying “Can’t stand no haters and honest, the truth isAnd my flow retarded (slowed down) , each beat did depart it
I take it that this is hip hop music which does use alot of slang (and not very positive stuff) and I cant stand the particular style.
Hip Hop for the most part is a bunch of cuss words slung together and usually is irritating as heck to me. It sounds angry and disrespectul.

Kim Gebhardt

That was my thought as well.

Lost and Tired

Thanks for sharing your opinion. I thought it was used as a verb as well but I wasn’t sure if she was tying to say her “flow” was stupid of not working right. Either way, I would have chosen a better word.

tannawings

A better word yes…. but in this style of music if you listen to it is disprespectful and offensive to women, to blacks , to whites, to nearly anyone and everyone. Am I surprised the word was used? Not particularly. She’s talking bout ho’s bitches etc etc etc. so saying/singing the word retard is just another part of her ‘message’ to whomever chooses to listen. I wouldnt own one of her CDs if you paid me.
