Tough choices

I've been talking with Lizze about everything that going on with her and Gavin.  I realize that from the outside looking in, it could appear as though we have just thrown Gavin away. The reality, couldn't be farther from that. Gavin is a very, very complex child and always has been.  His needs would be difficult for anyone to meet on the best of days. While we have moved him out of the house, we moved him in with family.  He's loved, cared for and comfortable.  It's not that Lizze's parents love him more than we do, it's the simple fact that there are no emotional  expectations placed on him while he's there.  A child with reactive attachment disorder doesn't do well with emotional expectations.  At home, he has two…

My kids with #Autism showing compassion

Yesterday was a particularly bad day for Lizze.  With the fluctuations in temperature and the rain, her fibromyalgia has been very difficult to manage. Most of the weekend required Lizze to use her cane to walk. Yesterday, when we were headed to the park, the boys helped Mommy walk out to the car. They were so gentle and patient, it was amazing to watch. As it turns out, Lizze and I have done something right because our kids are full of compassion. :-) This site is managed via WordPress for Android, courtesy of the @SamsungMobileUS Galaxy Note 2 by @Tmobile. Starting the week off late

We woke us this morning about the time Elliott should have been arriving at school. Needless to say, it's not a good way to start the week.  Thankfully, Elliott woke up in a good mood a s was able to get ready and out the door without much trouble. Hopefully, the stress of this morning won't put a damper on the rest of the day for him. This site is managed via WordPress for Android, courtesy of the @SamsungMobileUS Galaxy Note 2 by @Tmobile. Conquering cabin fever with a trip to the playground

On Sunday, we took the boys to the playground to get some wiggles out.  The weather was unseasonably nice and we took advantage of it.  The boys had fun and so did Lizze and I.  Lizze mostly took pictures but she was able to push Emmett on the swing for a little bit.  He loved that.  Sunday was one of those days where Lizze needed a cane to help her walk. She did awesome and so did the kids.  We did however,  miss Gavin being there.  Elliott made it a point to share that with us.  Unfortunately, even if Gavin were there, his health wouldn't allow for him to play. :-( On a happier note, check out some of the pictures I snapped while we were out having fun.  :-)…

If we didn’t love Gavin, our hearts wouldn’t be broken

I realize that this post is unnecessary because I don't really have anything to prove to anyone.  Having said that, in the event that Gavin does read this Blogger at some point, I want to make a few things very clear.  Lizze and I love Gavin very, very much.  For the first 10 years of his life, we did everything we possibly could for him and still do to this day.  Things however, have changed because Gavin's behaviors present unique problems within our household. Having said that, we view Gavin and his behaviors as two separate things.  It's not Gavin's fault that any of these things are a part of his life.  I've prayed countless times to take his burden away and carry it myself.  Unfortunately, I can't do that. …

The magic of redirection

I wrote in an earlier post about how hard of a time Emmett has been having this past weekend. We tried taking advantage of the almost 70°F weather and got both him and Elliott to the playground. That worked for a short time but once we left, things went down hill again. After we got home, I decided to try redirecting Emmett by taking him and the tortoise outside in the the yard.  It was warm enough for a short trip for our yet to be officially named Russian Tortoise. Emmett actually had a good time and enjoyed watching him crawl around  in the grass.  Emmett informed me that he wanted to get fast candy for Christmas.  I asked him what that was and he explained that it's a power…

Living in Downtown Meltdownville

I feel like Dorothy from the Wizard of OZ. However, the tornado that came through was named Gavin and we were all sucked up and magically transported to the land of Meltdownville. Mr. Emmett John has been melting down all day long.  Lizze and I even took the boys to the playground to get some wiggles out and that didn't even help much.  Emmett melted down in the grocery store, in the parking lot and the car ride home.  He melted down in the house,  on the porch and the front lawn.  I haven't seen him like this in awhile. In fact, the last time was when Gavin was home for Christmas break.  Meltdownville is not a fun to visit, let alone live in.  My heart breaks for Emmett because…

I need your help to compile a database of local #Autism community resources

In my never ending quest to improve the lives of special needs families, I've decided to begin compiling a list of local community resources.  Here's what I'm doing.  I'm collecting information about local community resources for special needs families.  Things like early childhood intervention, psychological care, pediatricians, dentists, therapists (Ot, PT, Speech), children's hospitals, government agencies etc.  These will be broken down by State and County.  My goal is to obtain this information in pdf form so that I can host it directly from my server and make it available for download/printing. By simply listing the information, I am in no way endorsing any of these organizations, unless otherwise stated. Please help me to help special needs families across the USA. As I have readers from almost every country around…
