If your child receives occupational therapy, you likely already know how much of a difference that can make in the life of a child with Autism and/or SPD. I want to remind everyone to make sure that you take an extra second out of your day to say Thank You to your child's OT.  Yes, it's their job to help our kids but so any of them are absolutely amazing and have such a positive impact on our kids. Don't they at least deserve a thank you? I for one owe our boys occupational therapists a great many thanks.  They've been instrumental in helping our boys to be where they are today. Emmett and I were doing his homework tonight and I noticed that he's reversing his numbers.  It's not all the time and when I pointed this out to him, he did better.  He's only 5 years old but I've never seen him do that before. We've known that Elliott does this on occasion and at times will write things as a mirror image. The school is keeping a close eye on him and will be doing so reading dysfunction testing this year.  Emmett's still really young and I think that we can rest easy that this is relatively common for his age.  With that said, I think we should work with him on this and have his teachers kinda watch out for this going forward and make sure that nothings…

When I picked up the boys today from school, Emmett's teacher wanted to talk to me.  As any Autism parent can probably relate to, having a teacher want to speak with you, isn't always a good thing.  I don't usually have much to worry about in this area anymore. That hasn't always been the case, especially with Gavin. As for what Emmett's teacher needed today, it was nothing but positive. She wanted to tell me how amazing Emmett was doing.  She went on and know about how much she enjoys Emmett and is blown away by his intellect.  Who doesn't like to hear that about their child? The boys had therapy tonight with Dr. Pattie. I was actually not feeling much like going tonight since we were just there last night. I'm really tired, stressed out and not in a good mood.  It's been a long day, after a night of little sleep.  Gavin is incessantly talking about food, Elliott and Emmett are pushing each others buttons but are otherwise behaving well.  I'm worried about meeting all my obligations and keeping this site up and running.  In truth, I'm worried about a great many things. One of the things that I didn't understand before becoming an Autism parent was just how many different aspects of life can be improved by things like OT,  PT and Speech therapy. Fast forward and a decade later, I'm all too aware of the benefits of these amazing therapies. All three of my boys with Autism, SPD and various other special needs, have derived great benefit from these therapies.  While insurance has a nasty habit of not wanting to pay for these therapies and we often have to fight to get these covered, it's well worth the effort.  Today is a great example of one of the many benefits OT has on my kids, Elliott in particular.  Elliott was having a rough day when I picked him up from school…

Another morning.....another meltdown over wearing a coat. This thing with Emmett wearing or not wearing a coat based on not wanting to have to hang the coat up at school, needs to stop.  I don't have any idea how to help him work past this.  The school is bending over backwards to try and accommodate him but it's not always helping.  I think that Emmett's reluctance to wear a coat because of having to subsequently hang it up, is an indication of how stressed out he is at the time. Lizze and I were finally able to convince him to wear a sweatshirt because he wouldn't have to take it off at school.
