Dental drama

Gavin has an emergency appointment in the morning with the special needs dentist.

You may recall that Gavin has some pretty major problems with his teeth. It’s something called Dentinogenesis Imperfecta (DI). In Gavin’s case, his enamel is defective, which causes his teeth to have a brownish color. A few years ago, Gavin had to have his back molars crowned because they had no enamel.

The other huge problem is that Gavin has pulled out so many of his teeth before they weren’t ready to come out. Now his existing adult teeth have shifted and the new adult teeth that are just now starting to come in, have no room. He actually, literally, has 2 teeth side by side, if that makes sense. It’s almost like they are sharing the same socket. I have a very bad feeling about what we are going to find out in the morning.

I think Gavin is going to need to have adult teeth removed in order for the new teeth to come in. I think he will need braces, at the very minimum, in order to fix the rest.

The reason I say dental drama is because he is going to scream the entire time. The dentist already freaks me out beyond words. Lizze normally takes care of this stuff because I’ll literally have a panic attack. I’m uneasy right now, just thinking about it. I don’t want my fears to spread to the boys so that’s why Lizze typically handles the dental stuff.

With that said, this time is much different. I want to be there for this because this is much more serious than a regular cleaning. Also, the specialists at the Cleveland Clinic have said that his teeth are tied to whatever exotic, degenerative neurological disorder he has. I need to be there for this and I want to make sure Gavin knows I’m there for him. I will definitively have to keep my emotions in check but this is way to important for me to crumble. I’ll just do what I have to do and, if need be, fall apart when I get home. 🙂

I’m praying that this time we finally get some answers. We so desperately need some answers.

I feel your pain. I too have had some problems at the dentist. I go there telling myself I’m preventing future problems. It doesn’t get me completely over the fear however it does stop me from screaming out of the dentist room. Good luck. I hope this helps a little.
