One of our toughest daily struggles: Self-Regulation

Gavin is struggling with self-regulation (not that it’s anything do) and one of the more specific issues is with eating.  If we allowed Gavin to his own devices, he would eat and eat until he pukes.

I don’t know that I’ve ever heard him say that he’s full.

This is one of the reasons that he has to be watched so closely.  He will sneak/hoard food if you don’t watch and he will break your heart by telling you how hungry he is.  Since he’s moved back home he’s dropping the weight he had gained.  I think he’s down to about 125 lbs now and he’s lost his chipmunk cheeks and his belly.

It’s really hard because we basically have to tell him when he’s had enough to eat.  He’ll still feel hungry but we have to pull the plug.

I’m hoping that getting his rapid weight gain under control,  will help to prolong the effectiveness of his medications.

One of the things that scares me is the idea that we won’t be here one day and Gavin could eat himself into obesity rather quickly.  This would impact whether or not his meds work.  An unmedicated Gavin is very, very scary.

I keep telling my wife Lizze, that we have to live forever.

I heard of a rare condition that the brain does not get the signal from the stomach saying it is full. I remember watching a Mystery Diagnoses on youtube were a boy would just eat and eat, his body never got a signal from the stomach saying that it is full, and with the kid the body was always in starvation mode because it would never get a full signal.

I believe it’s called Prader-Willi Syndrome, and in those cases the compulsion to eat is so strong that children will literally eat out of random trash cans unless everything around them gets locked up. (a client of mine had a daughter with it.)
