How does your #autistic child deal with #anxiety?

As the title suggests, I was wondering during how your kids on the spectrum deal with anxiety.  I'm taking Elliott, my 6 year old aspie to the doctors to make sure he doesn't have an ear infection. No shots or blood work will be involved but Elliott is having an anxiety attack anyway.  It's the simple idea of going to the doctor that sets Jim into an panic. I don't even tell him we're going until the last minute so he's doesn't have a lot of time to worry.  If I don't tell him where we are going than he will have trust issues with me and I certainly don't want that.  I don't know how to help him work through this. I've tried talking to him many times, even…

Out with the Cold and in with the Ear Infection

After all the drama this morning, we discover that Elliott's ear has been bothering him. He was at the doctor last year, the last time his ear was bothering him.  Turned out, he had a massive ear infection and it took multiple rounds of antibiotics to address.  The scary thing was that his ear so bad the Doctor said he should have been agonizing.  However, Elliott never really complained. Hopefully, this isn't a repeat but we need to make sure.  This site is managed via WordPress for Android, courtesy of the @SamsungMobileUS Galaxy Note 2 by @Tmobile. Please forgive any typos. #Autism: Where does “normal” kid behavior fit in?

I woke up this morning to Elliott screaming at Lizze and refusing to get ready for school. He's been doing this more and more often.  Nothing is going on at school, so that's not an issue. It's like anytime that we ask Elliott to do something that he doesn't want to, he completely freaks out. Sound like anyone else we know? I have no idea what to do aside from holding him accountable for choices.  The big triggers are asking him to get dressed or undressed.  We want him to change out of his school clothes after school and he refuses.. Ya know, as a parent raising 3 boys with special needs, it's very tough for me to know where "normal kid behaviors"  fit into any of this.  Is this…

Join me for Twitter Tuesday

I pretty excited about stepping outside my comfort zone and spending the day on Twitter.  I want to engage my readers in a different and more real time way.  I don't normally venture too far from my blog but this is something I mean to change. I'm always looking to meet new people and gain perspective by seeing life through their eyes.  My goal is to begin a dialog, make new friends and visit with some old ones as well. Not that anyone wants to talk to me but if you should feel the need to want to talk, I'll be on Twitter for most of the day. I use Hootsuite and receive all tweet directed to @Lost_and_Tired in real time on my phone.  From there I can respond, no…

A good day at school

Elliott's first day back to school was pretty good.  He was sick for most of last week but was feeling well enough to return to school this morning.  I wasn't sure how things were going to go because Elliott doesn't always like change.  However, he had a great day and my concerns were relieved when he came out of the building with a big smile on his face.  :-) This site is managed via WordPress for Android, courtesy of the @SamsungMobileUS Galaxy Note 2 by @Tmobile. Please forgive any typos. Where do #autistic adults come from?

I have to admit that my focus on advocacy is fairly limited.  Perhaps that's needs to change.  However, I'm heavily involved with my 3 autistic boys.  That's what I know.  I tend to focus on what I know, first hand.  Right now, I'm a parent to 3 young autistic boys and that's what my life revolves around.  I'm also a special needs parent and so I know first hand what challenges are faced by a special needs parent.  That's way you don't hear me speak to much about much outside of that arena, at least for now.  My kids are what I know and my personal experience is what I share. Having said that, as they grow, I grow with them and my advocacy will evolve as well.  However, and…
