#Autism and #SPD: Our struggle with clothes

Emmett is going to be 5 years old in the next few months and we are still struggling to keep him clothed. It's one of those things that sorta make him who he is. He came home from my parents house yesterday and before I even saw him, I saw signs that he had been through here. It's like the moment he arrived home he ran right up to the bathroom and took is clothes off. For the most part, he will keep his clothes on when he's at his grandparents house but there are still times when we go to pick him up and he's running around in his underpants.  :-) While Emmett is a child with Autism, he's also dealing with Sensory Processing Dysfunction as well. Basically, clothes…

What video games does your child with #Autism like to play?

Kids love video games. Kids with #Autism seem to really be drawn to them as well and even more so. That’s certainly the case with my kids anyways. Frankly, you can't escape them. Practically every store, both online and brick-and-mortar, sell video games in brightly lit aisles that draw kids in like moths to flame. I thought it would be cool to share what our kids favorite video games are.  It can be difficult to find games that are age or developmentally appropriate for our kids on the #Autism spectrum. You can visit wepc.com for the history of video games and maybe play it with your kids What games do your kids enjoy playing?  What system do you have?  What games do you enjoy playing with your kids? This could be a…

#Autism: Pet dogs and Pet names

You have all been introduced to Bella, our Boxer puppy.  She's basically Emmett's dog.  They have grown very close over that past few weeks. Anyway,  Emmett has changed her name a little bit.  Instead of Bella he now calls her,  Bella Welland. On occasion,  he even calls Princess. Wiggle Bottom. He really connects with her I'm really grateful for that. Looking for more cool dog names? Check these out. When Autism Awareness truly fails….

When Autism Awareness Truly Fails.... I have been wanting to write this post for a few days but haven't had the energy. However, despite my lack of energy, I feel it's very important to write this because what has happened to my family and Elliott in particular, really does affect more then just us. In fact, I think this has effects all of us within the Autism and special needs community. As I have previously shared, Elliott was barred from transitioning from pre-school to kindergarten at the school he attended last year. You can read some of the back story in When Schools Discriminate. Since that post was written, the school has once again denied Elliott access not because of any issues or behavioral problems. Instead he is being barred simply because he…

Resentment,Grief and Guilt (A very honest post)

I want to talk about a very personal situation and share my feelings on this particular subject. Most of my posts revolve around Gavin, my 11 year old son. Honestly, that's because Gavin's behaviors are one of my single biggest source of stress. Please, notice I said "Gavin's behaviors" and not "Gavin".  Gavin is a very unique and very complicated person. I want to be very honest about my feelings in this post in order to give the world a better understanding of what our lives are like. I also want people to understand that it's okay to feel the way you feel. Raising a child on the spectrum is no easy task, but in the end, is totally worth while. Gavin came into my life when he was about…

Ready to give up

Lizze just got back from taking Emmett to Dr. H to make sure Emmett John didn't have an ear infection. He has been pulling on his ears and digging into them and we wanted to make sure everything is ok. His ears are clean and the tubes are clear. So it looks like Emmett John is trying to figure out why everything is silent. We think his hearing loss has been gradual. He is probably loosing the rest of it now. We know that he can no longer hear us. It's so hard to know this and be able to do nothing to stop it. For more information, you can also check the Complete Guide To Hearing Loss and Hearing Aids from medicalprices.co.uk. I don't want to hear how it…
