It’s easy to push our own needs to the back burner when we’re raising kids with autism, ADHD, or other disabilities. But self-care isn’t selfish. It’s survival. Anxiety is very common in the autism community. Research shows that up to 40% of autistic kids and teens also have an anxiety disorder, compared to about 15% in non-autistic youth. If you’re raising a kid with autism, listen up because this is really important. I know how hard this life can be. I know how challenging this life can be. I’ve been doing this for 25 years. I have three autistic kids and a huge chunk of this has been as a single dad. One of the most important things that I’ve learned along the way is that where we are today does not represent where we are going to be tomorrow. Our kids future is not prewritten and just because we’re struggling with something today does not mean we’re struggling with it down the road.
