Building Forward

Update: Totally forgot to publish this after writing. Better late than never. ☺ This is going to be a great week. Work is going well, and I've been able to start connecting to some local organizations that seem pretty amazing. One of my goals this year was to expand into my local community, and I'm making progress. That feels amazing. I've also been talking to someone extremely knowledgeable in navigating some of the things that Gavin needs help with. It's so incredibly helpful to have a conversation about this and walk away with a fresh perspective, as well as a plan of attack. I'm going to be reaching out to our local DD board and finding out what I have to do to have Gavin re-evaluated. I think there were some…

We just hit a major milestone but I have mixed feelings

I've hit a pretty major parenting milestone. Elliott and Emmett are both in high school now and I no longer have any kids in grade school. We can take this a step further and also acknowledge that not only are they both in high school, but they're both in mainstream high school. I'm so proud of them and part of me feels like I've done something right as a parent, and the other part of me knows that the credit belongs to the two of them. It's so amazing to see them doing so well and I couldn't be prouder. There were plenty of times along the way when I would have never thought this possible, or in their best interest, and yet here we are. Just the four of…

Feeling a bit out of sorts lately

I've been feeling a bit disconnected lately and it's got me in kind of a weird headspace. The kids have been sick for a week, which is stressful enough because they've missed a lot of school as a result. As I'm writing this, I can hear them both coughing in the living room and they're supposed to returning to school in the morning. It's nothing more than a cold or sinus thing but I know I would be upset if my kids came home from school as we're drowning in new COVID cases, telling me that there was a kid in their class coughing and hacking up a lung all day. I would be livid that this child was allowed to return to school. Ohio is back up to over…

How I recovered from a rough morning

My day started off a little rough. Nothing happened, I was just in a bit of a funk. I pushed myself to go workout and that helped. I remembered I hadn't eaten anything either. The workout was great and eating took care of the rest. Anyway, I bounced back and ended up having a fantastic day. Emmett went to my parents for the day and Elliott wanted to go back to Cuyahoga Valley National Park. We ended up going by ourselves and had a great time. Elliott and I don't get one on one time very often, so it was nice. I also just found out I will be childless Thursday and Friday. Really kinda excited about that. I don't have anything to do but the downtime is welcomed for…

We pretty much kicked ass today

It's been a pretty amazing day here in The Autism Dad house and I don't say that very often. The first day of Emmett's new schedule went off without much of a hitch. He did pretty good and I'm proud of him. Tomorrow will be the test because normally, he wouldn't have any classes, as it would be an off day. This will be a test. Anyway, the car is back. That's right. It only took 4 or 5 weeks but she's looking good. Big thanks to my Mom for helping me get there. It was the safest approach because while they don't quarantine, they do take this very seriously. Masks on and windows down for a 5 minute drive. Thanks Mom. ☺ ♥ Can't wait until February when I…

One last trip before for the next few weeks

I took the boys to Quail Hollow for one last hike before the car goes in to get fixed. It's going to be a few weeks before I get it back. We don't go anywhere very often but it sucks anyway. We found an entirely new trail and it took us roughly 2.5 miles start to finish. Everyone did awesome and the weather was perfect. We were so far away from anyone else that we were able to take our masks for a little while and smell the Fall leaves. ☺ There's an abandoned house in the park that I've always wanted to know more about. You can see it in the gallery above. The trail we took today lead us right behind it. You can see the path we…

It was actually a decent day

We had a pretty decent day. I received my replacement podcast equipment. I use a Rodecaster Pro and the other day, the boys and I were interviewed for an upcoming TV segment. I had to plug in headphones for everyone. I've not used them all before and one of them was broken. I was able to get this replaced but I was also shutdown until it arrived. It showed up today, so that was cool. We had a quiet day for the most part and that's okay. We did end up going hiking for a little while and there was a bit of excitement as we tried to leave the house. We were able to eventually get away and went for a nice little hike. For the most part, the…

I feel pretty good about today

Emmett's first day of school wasn't as smooth as Elliott's but it went okay. The main issue was that we didn't get his information until this morning. Not a huge deal because he was still able to get some assignments done and turned in. It's a three day weekend and we are back at it on Tuesday of next week. I shutdown for a little bit today because I had a massive headache and I'm grateful the kids allowed me to close my eyes for a little while. I'm so stressed out and my head was pounding. I don't like taking a nap while the kids are active but as they get older, they're much more independent. The plan for the day was to get some work done and have…
