Day 1 of Gavin’s Wish Trip: The journey to Charlotte NC

It's pretty much been the longest day ever. We spent a total of about twelve hours in the car today and it was about as much fun as you'd expect. lol Something I wish I'd done was look into a dash cam. It would be awesome to document the actual drive itself because there will be many things I miss while I'm focused on the road. In all seriousness, the boys did amazingly well. We definitely had a few hiccups but considering how long we were in the car, all of the challenges my little minions are dealing with on the best of days, they did pretty damn good. I actually very proud of them because this leg of our trip could have gone very wrong, but we're still alive and…

The moment has arrived

Alrighty folks, the moment has arrived. Lizze and I have spent the last couple of days, scrambling to get everything we need for this trip of a life time. We ended up spending way more than we had planned because everyone needed new clothes. The positive side of this is that the clothes will last way longer than this trip and truthfully, we all desperately needed them. I'm not sure if it will impact the trip at all but it really shouldn't. It will however, impact life when we return home, but we'll figure it out. Maggie has been boarded and my Mom acclimated to the ferrets. ☺ For the most part, we are packed and need only to move everything to the van in the morning. We are waiting…

Last minute preparations for our trip

Lizze and I spent a large part of Wednesday, running errands and collecting some of the things we need in order to leave Friday morning. One of the things we made sure to do was get all the boys new headphones. This one act will provide an added layer of sanity for the fifteen hour drive. 😉 Today is our last day to get ready before we leave and it's going to be a busy one. Lizze has an appointment first thing in the morning. After that, we're going to be heading to pick up a few things for Maggie, before taking her to the kennel. The boys said goodbye to her prior to leaving for school. We figured it would be easier on Maggie to streamline this process as…

The final obstacle is overcome

The last major thing we needed to do in order to get ready for our trip to Florida was to figure out a new enclosure for the ferrets. Ten days is a long time for them to be locked up for and we needed to make sure that they couldn't escape. We also wanted to make sure that they had enough room to play around and not go crazy from boredom. The best option was to build a custom cage that would meet our needs. Over the last few days, we've been working on a solution to our problem. With a tremendous amount of help from my Dad, we built the perfect cage to move the ferrets to. ☺ We haven't set it up completely yet but we will work…

Today is the Wish Granting presentation

I didn't know this but apparently, there's a wish granting presentation that goes along with having a wish granted. I'm not entirely sure what that entails, but we're more than happy to be a part of it. The organization, Wishes Can Happen, will be coming to our house and presenting Gavin with a certificate, commemorating his wish. There will be other logistical things dealt with as well. This is my understanding of the process, and I admittedly have very little insight into this presentation. I think this is partly a PR thing and we're happy to help out in any way we can. If we get any pictures, I'll be sharing them.. ☺

We got some sad news today

I took Maggie to the vet this morning. She needed some vaccines before she could be boarded on Thursday, for our trip to Florida the following day. The physical appointment went well but we got some sad news. As we suspected, Maggie has begun losing her hearing. This was pretty obvious based on the fact that she doesn't respond to noise anymore. I was prepared for that, but I wasn't prepared to hear that she's losing her vision as well. The vet couldn't say how bad her vision is but her eyes are glassing over, and I guess that's not a good thing. She's never had a very good sense of smell but it's pretty much nonexistent at this point. The positive take away is that she's physically healthy. She…

The boys were pleasantly surprised

The boys were pleasantly surprised this morning to learn that school had been canceled. It's been very quiet so far today and I really appreciate that quiet, as it's a pleasant change of pace. In a few minutes, I'll be getting ready to take Maggie to the vet for her shots. While I'm there, I'll talk to the vet about the return of the tumors on he legs. If he wants them removed, we'll set something up for the beginning of November. Aside from that, she's basically in need of her Kennel Cough vaccine, in order to be boarded at the end of the week. We've never been away from her in almost eight years and I'm not sure how this is going to go.

The absolute last thing I expected to happen

It was a typical Sunday night. Lizze and I had settled in to watch the series finale of Teen Wolf, when I received a message from one of the boys teachers. I typically ignore most of the messages because they're usually nothing that pertains to us directly. For whatever reason I checked it and learned something very interesting. Apparently, the heat index will have the indoor temperature of the school at well over 100°F and therefore, school has been canceled. A few minutes after reading this, the school called and I received a text as well. This will make getting things ready for our trip a bit more complicated but we'll have to work with it. The big thing for today is getting Maggie to the vet, and finishing up…
