Feeding our marriage

Lizze and I had a nice night. We went and saw the new Spider-Man Homecoming movie, and it was awesome.  I can't remember the last time we spontaneously went to a movie, let alone a super late showing like tonight. It felt good to be able to do that. It's important that Lizze and I get time to feel like a couple.  Things like this help to keep our relationship strong, and our sanity intact. Being Autism parents is really stressful, especially when it comes to maintaining a marriage. It's really important to focus on our relationship, because that helps us to be better parents.

Take advantage of the breaks

When Autism parenting is what you do, day in and say out, it gets exhausting. The reality is, so few of us get regular breaks. It's unbelievable, unless you've experienced it, but considering how fast Autism is growing, there's a serious lack of resources available for parents.  This will vary depending on where you live, but generally speaking, it's hard to find resources to help with the day to day challenges, associated with Autism parenting.  One of the hardest things for an Autism parent to come by, is a break.  Getting a break is not only the hardest thing to come by, but also one of the most important things an Autism parent needs. If this seems like a problem, you're absolutely right.  There is no direct fix for this,…

Is it okay to need a break from your child with #Autism? I have the answer.

Okay folks, I generally try to avoid giving direct parenting advice, because everyone's situation is different. What works for me or my family, may not work for you or yours. That doesn't stop people from asking for advice all the time though.  I've decided that I will begin offering non-specific, widely applicable Autism parenting advice. Take it or leave it. ☺  Let's begin with a very important one.  Is it okay to need a break from your child with Autism?  This is one of those questions that probably enters every Autism parents mind at least once. As parents, we have this irrational idea that because our child/ren have Autism, we aren't allowed to experience emotions like anger, frustration, or even resentment.  Somehow, it became unacceptable to have a very human…

Using everyday activities that work on important life skills I wanted to show an example of how, as parents, we can use everyday activities to help teach our kids with Autism, valuable life skills. Life skills are important because they are necessary for independence. My oldest is very low functioning and I use every opportunity to work on life skills with him. Today happen to be grocery shopping and bagging groceries. This isn't nearly as easy as it sounds. It can take a great deal of repetition, patience and smashed bread. Lol The end result is worth it when he learns a new skill, even if it's not perfect, and it's never perfect. It's all about progress and moving forward. Seize every opportunity you can to help you kids learn important life skills, as early as possible. The sooner you start, the better, because it can take time...

While we were at the park today, I spent some time taking pictures of the many flowers that are living there. The last time we were there, we saw an elderly couple working in the garden, and they did an amazing job. I wish my yard looked even a tiny fraction of how good this huge garden does. I'm feeling motived to work in the yard this summer, and make things look as nice as they possibly can. We're somewhat limited because of funding and where we live, but I'm all about making the best of what we have to work with...

Things I do to manage my #Autism Parenting Stress

One of the most important things an Autism parent can do is take care of themselves. I wanted to share one of the things I do in order to better manage my stress. While we were at the park today, I spent some time taking pictures of the many flowers that are living there. Taking pictures relaxes me and helps me to put things into perspective. Did I do well enough today?

Folks, I'm burned out. It's been about twenty-four hours since I've written anything. It's important to understand that while I'm physically and emotionally exhausted, I'm not giving up on anything.  One of the things I've learned on my Autism Parenting journey is, that I have no idea what tomorrow has in store.  No matter how bad today has been, as long as I live to see tomorrow, there's always hope. It's so easy to get lost on this treacherous, exhausting, overwhelming, and all consuming journey. I've found myself lost many times along the way. In fact, that's where the title of my first blog came from.  I felt lost and tired, especially in the beginning. I can totally relate to what many of you are going through.  Sometimes, the only…
