Holy Shit! Gavin hit a MAJOR milestone tonight

Every once in awhile, the kids do something that completely blows me away. They always impress me but sometimes, what they do is a real game changer. Tonight, was one of those night for Gavin. For the last five years or so, Gavin has been receiving IVIG Infusions in order to treat his Common Variable Immunodeficiency. In all the hundreds of infusions, Gavin has always hated the needles and who can blame him. He's never liked them but at the same time, he's never complained. ☺ Over the years, he's slowly taken more and more responsibility for his infusions. He's gotten to the point where the only thing he wasn't able to do was put the needles in his belly. He has been to uncomfortable doing that and that was…

Good job Gavin

I'm looking at this as a blessing but it's also kinda interesting at the same time. With all the challenges Gavin faces on a daily basis, including memory loss, cognitive decline and a bunch more, he's still doing well in some areas. This morning Gavin had his IVIG infusion and was able to put it all together, without any noticeable problems. It's not really that complex but the fact that he was still able to put all the pieces together, and draw up his medication, is a good thing. I find this interesting because there are very simple things that Gavin is unable to do anymore. Putting his IVIG infusion together is more challenging and he can still do it. Good job Gavin.... ☺

Gavin just finished a very painful infusion

Poor Gavin had a really rough IVIG infusion this evening. Everything went as it normally does but for some reason it was really painful. Every once in awhile, Gavin's infusion will be incredibly painful. I haven't a clue as to why this is, but it could be related to something as simple as needle placement. Maybe the needles were sitting funny or for some reason, the medication burned as it was going in.. Thankfully it's over with and the pain has subsided but I really hate when any of my kids are in pain. 🙁

How Gavin handled tonight is a blessing

Gavin had his IVIG infusion tonight because and it went pretty well. In fact, Gavin set the entire thing up, all by himself. The only thing he didn't do was please the needles in his stomach. This is a pretty big step forward for him. There weren't any side effects tonight and he didn't complain of being sick at bedtime either. The last few nights he's gone to bed not feeling well. It's nice for him to go to sleep without any discomfort. He's been sick on and off this week. Thankfully, nothing major occurred and we didn't have to go to the hospital. That is a true blessing. ☺

Gavin took a big step forward today

Gavin has suddenly become more interested in assisting with his own IVIG infusions. He's been putting the equipment together for the longest time but never wanted to draw up the meds and put the pump together.  The last two infusions, he's asked to draw up the medication and prime the pump.  It's not difficult but it does take fine motor proficiency that Gavin simply doesn't have. He struggled with it but finished the job, all by himself. That's awesome, because it's really important for him to learn to do these things on his own.  I'm really proud of him because he didn't get frustrated and just kept working at it until it was done.  I meant to take a picture but forgot. I'll try to remember on Monday.  The last…

Gavin’s IVIG infusion was a success

Gavin had his IVIG infusion last night, because we were gone for most of the day. He did really well both during and after his infusion. Aside for physical exhaustion, there weren't any side effects that I was aware of.  Like I said, he was exhausted afterwards, and went to bed shortly after the process concluded.  Gavin looks a bit run down, but isn't complaining of anything, not that he really ever does. As far as I know, the only issue he is struggling with today is that his hip popped out once again. My understanding is that hurts like a bitch.  I'm not making any plans for today because I want him resting, especially because of how run down he appears to be.

I’m so proud of Gavin

Gavin's labs have been drawn and I'm waiting to get the results. I'm cautiously optimistic about today's numbers because yesterday they were coming back up.  In the meantime, I need to get Gavin's IVIG infusion started.  We are supposed to get a new delivery of his supplies today but they haven't arrived yet. There's enough to do today's infusion but we have nothing left for Monday.  I'm so proud of Gavin because he's taking this like a champ. He's already had his blood drawn four times this week alone and that will at least continue into the middle of next week. It depends on the results of said bloodwork.  He's not complaining, although he'd prefer not to have to go through this.  As hard as this is for Lizze and…

How the IVIG infusion went

Gavin's infusion went pretty well yesterday. For some reason, the while process went really fast, and was completed in about an hour. That was really good timing.  Thankfully, Gavin didn't appear to suffer any negative side effect and that's something we're always grateful for. ☺
