Gavin’s IVIG infusion is NOT going well

Gavin's IVIG infusion is not going well this morning. For some reason, we can't get any flow and I'm having to force the solution through the tubing manually. It works but it's very difficult and quite painful for a Gavin. I don't know what's wrong for sure, but it could be scar tissue. All I can do is continue to force it through or re-stick the needles in his belly. Gavin wants to avoid being re-stuck and I don't blame him. Hopefully, this will finish up sometime this afternoon and he will be okay. I'm just going to keep an eye on him through the Ping camera from Vivint Home. I've found so many uses for this system but the best have involved using the cameras to monitor my kids…

Finally, some good news

About mid-morning, I received a phone call from the pharmacy responsible for my recent stress level increase. They informed me that Gavin's pump had to be ordered, but it had arrived and was going to be delivered today. I'm glad it's going to be here today, assume it arrives because it hasn't yet. The frustrating part remains though. When it's known that something is this important and it won't arrive when promised, a quick phone call would have alleviated a great deal of stress from the last week or so. Shit, for that matter a returned phone call would have worked as well. At this point, as long as it arrives today and Gavin can do his infusion in the morning without having to worry about the pump dying on…

I’m really getting pissed

I left a third message at the pharmacy that supplies Gavin's IVIG infusion supplies. You can't just get these anywhere, as they are considered specialized items or something to that effect. The pump that Gavin's been using for his IVIG infusions is going bad. It's about five years old. It's successfully delivered nearly five hundred infusions for Gavin but it's on its last leg. It no longer applies consistent pressure and that makes for a difficult infusion. I called on January 2nd to have a new one delivered. I was promised it would be here by last Friday, in time for Gavin's infusion that day. It never arrived and they never provided an explanation as to why. As I stated above, I've left three messages this week alone and not…

We had two close calls with Gavin’s meds this week

We've had two pretty significant issues this week, in regards to Gavin's Clozapine and IVIG infusions. I mentioned previously that there was a issue with Gavin's Clozapine refill and that governing body that okays Gavin's refills has decided to make his start over. That means bloodwork every Monday and only seven days worth of pills at a time. Anyway, I had called the pharmacy on Tuesday morning to remind them to pull his lab results because he needed his refill before Wednesday. They assured me that it would be done and delivered that afternoon. Unfortunately, they never showed up and I had to chase them done and make sure it was refilled immediately. They finally refilled it but because it took them so long, they weren't able to deliver it…

His IVIG infusion had him in tears tonight

We officially put Christmas behind us this evening and began the sorted journey of getting back to our normal routines. In Gavin's case, that meant he had to do his IVIG infusion, which he does every Monday and Friday. Unfortunately for Gavin, his IVIG infusion didn't go so well. He started the process about 6 PM and immediately hit a few bumps in the road. The first infusion site needed to be replaced because it wasn't working and the second infusion site was leaking. Both of these scenarios are nightmare scenarios for Gavin because it involves more needles and more pain. To make things even worse for him, the procedure ended up taking almost 6 hours. This put Gavin several hours passed his self proclaimed bedtime and that had him…

Hasn’t he already been through enough?

For the third night in a row, Gavin has struggled to go to sleep because he isn't feeling well. Last night it was a stomachache and headache. Tonight is was a stomachache again. I think we need to get him into his gastro again and this time look at gastroparesis. Lizze has this, it's genetic and it's a large part of what makes her so miserable everyday. We do have a mark in the win column tonight. Gavin did his infusion on his own once again and did a great job. I don't think his condition at bedtime was related to his infusion, but who knows. There weren't any obvious side effects and he didn't have any complaints about how it went. We do however, need to order a new…

Sometimes I feel like a dick for raising my voice

Gavin had his IVIG infusion this morning and he did it on his own. This was probably the most successful one that he's done on his own. The infusion went relatively well and there were no physical hang ups after it was started. Gavin did get upset while he was putting the needles in place though. He doesn't deal with frustration very well and has a tendency to want to quit or get help before he's really tried. Today was one of those times. There was an issue with the tape the holds the needles in place getting all bunched up. His first reaction is to panic. Lizze and I were right there but we didn't rush to his aide because we wanted him to work through it. All he…

Today’s MASSIVELY AWESOME Victory

Today marked the third time in a row that Gavin has done his own IVIG Infusion, start to finish. I can't tell you how proud of him I am. When I look back 5 or 6 years, I remember how much he struggled with needles. It would literally take half a dozen people to draw his blood. The experience was awful for all of us but especially for Gavin. Now he goes in and has his bloodwork done on his own while I wait in the car. The last major obstacle he needed to overcome was starting his own IVIG Infusion and that required placing the needles into his belly. He's wanted nothing to do with that until recently. For the third time in a row, Gavin has done it…
