The 2 awards my kids received this week

Elliott and Emmett have both received an award from school this week. Elliott received the below certificate, for completely the math groups listed on the paper. I'm not entirely sure what those are or how they were given to him but, he knocked them out and that makes me proud. ☺ Emmett received an award for having the most positive point on Class Dojo for the nine week grading period. He earned lunch with his teachers. This was really cool cause they buy him lunch from a fast food place. He chose Subway and was able to eat with his teachers today at lunch. He was so excited about this and as with Elliott, I'm very proud.. I'm always proud on the boys but it's something all together different, when…

A knock down drag out morning

Emmett had a rough morning in regards to shoes and socks. Recently, Lizze had gotten into a newer routine with his shoes and socks, increasing the frequency in which he can tolerate them. For some reason, he just wasn't having it this morning. There was a massive meltdown, lots of screaming and loss of sanity. We did everything we could think of to help him but nothing seemed to work. Eventually, Lizze was successful and while we were a little late, the boys got to school. I can't even begin to imagine a life where even the simplest of things isn't a knock down drag out brawl. The reason it bothers me so much, aside from the obvious, is that these occurrences are so stressful for Emmett. It sucks for…

I’ve got 1 child home from school today

Emmett had a really rough morning. He had a hard time waking up and wasn't doing any better after moving around for a little bit. Unfortunately, he had a tummy ache and a headache. He was excited about going to school today but didn't feel well enough to go. That throws a wrench into today's plans but what are you going to do. He resting in his giant beanbag but hasn't eaten much of anything this morning. Hopefully, he'll feel better once we can get some sleep.

#Autism and Issues with Sleep are Killing Me

This is going to be very short and to the point.  I'm fucking exhausted. Both Elliott and Emmett are awake and show no signs of slowing down. It's currently 2 am and my body just wants to shutdown. Elliott's not been sleeping well at all since the bullying thing started up again. It may just be coincidence but that's just when this particular sleep issue began. Emmett was actually sleeping until he woke up at midnight to use the bathroom and realized Elliott was awake. I basically had a choice of making them go to their rooms and try to sleep, while I did the same or just cut my losses and move to the living room. I chose the later because it had the best chance of sleep. Elliott…

The boys finally return to therapy

The boys make their return to therapy for the first time since early December. With the holidays, there were therapists on vacation and offices closed. It's been about a month since they've been to therapy.  Gavin is returning to Speech and Emmett is returning to Occupational therapy.  Both boys are super excited and look forward to returning to Akron Children's Hospital..

One of my kids just arrived home with new shoes

Mr. Emmett spent a large part of this morning with his grandparents. They wanted to undertake the difficult task of finding Emmett shoes he will wear. Emmett just arrived home a few minutes ago and with him, is a pair of shoes he's pretty excited about. I'm super grateful for the help and I'm glad Emmett feels good about these shoes. That being said, I'm not going to hold my breath because I've been around this block a few too many times. I'm certainly not trying to rain on anyone's parade but I will remain cautiously optimistic.

It’s was a sh!tty morning for this #Autism Dad

This morning sucked. On the positive side though, both boys got to school but it was a shifty, meltdown filled morning in The Autism Dad household. Elliott was pretty hyper but mostly cooperative and that's awesome. Emmett was another story all together. He's been having a rough time falling asleep at night since Christmas break threw his routine off and we've lost most all of the progress we'd made in that area. He's not getting enough sleep and that exacerbates the sensory related challenges we face every single morning in regards to shoes and socks. It was an absolute nightmare today and we battled for at least thirty minutes before he finally kept his shoes and socks on long enough to make it out the door, into the almost 0°F…
